BACKGROUND: High concentrations of NEFA relative to a defined reference or 'cut-point' values before calving can predict the risk of specific or collective periparturient disease events. OBJECTIVES: A field-based cohort study was conducted to evaluate the value and critical points of serum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) at the precalving time to predict the occurrence of postpartum diseases and reproductive performance in dairy cows. METHODS: Blood samples were taken from 521 high-yielding dairy cows at 1 week (±3 days) before calving and NEFA levels were measured. Health and reproduction information of each cow includes dystocia, retained placenta, milk fever, metritis, mastitis, pregnancy in the first insemination and pregnancy in the first two inseminations, and culling in the first 60 days of lactation and milk production. RESULTS: Our results show that there are significant relationships between precalving NEFA with the probability of pregnancy at the first and the first two inseminations after calving. The cows that had NEFA concentrations less than 0.5 mmol/L at the last week of pregnancy were 3.51 and 3.15 times more likely to be pregnant at first insemination and the first two inseminations, respectively. Also, our results showed that there are significant relationships between precalving NEFA concentration and the likelihood of dystocia and milk fever. The probability of dystocia and milk fever occurrence were 2.56 and 1.91 times greater in those cows that had NEFA concentrations more than 0.3 mmol/L, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The present results indicated that Increasing NEFA during the prepartum period could adversely affect the reproductive efficiency of dairy cows.

Nonambulatory dairy cattle pose a complex problem due to the challenges associated with prevention, appropriate treatment and management, and arriving at an accurate prognosis. There is a breadth of literature regarding this topic, of which there is currently no formal synthesis. The objective of this scoping review was to describe and characterize the literature investigating risk factors, sequela, preventions, treatments, and prognostic factors for nonambulatory conditions in dairy cattle, with the intent of qualitatively synthesizing knowledge of the topic and identifying gaps in the literature. A literature search was conducted in 6 databases and 2 conference proceeding archives, which returned 7,568 unique articles. Initial screening of abstracts resulted in 1,544 articles reviewed at the full-text stage, of which 379 were included for data extraction. Over 75% of the included literature was published after 1980, and the most common countries in which these studies took place were the United States (n = 72), Canada (18), Sweden (17), and Germany (17). Common eligibility criteria used for inclusion were geographic region (97) and parity (92). Of the 379 studies included in this review, 144 were randomized controlled trials and 235 were observational studies. The majority of the controlled trials assessed prevention of nonambulatory conditions (116), most commonly through supplementation of vitamin D (27) and calcium (25) or the provision of anionic salts (22). Of the 28 studies focusing on treatment of nonambulatory conditions, 26 focused on calcium administration. Becoming nonambulatory was evaluated as an outcome in 165 of the observational studies. Frequently measured risk factors for becoming nonambulatory included hematological variables, such as blood calcium (73), phosphorus (53) and magnesium (42), and other factors such as parity (35) and breed (22). Recovery from a nonambulatory condition was the outcome in 31 of the observational studies, with commonly measured prognostic indicators being calcium (9), phosphorus (9), and duration of recumbency (7). Nonambulatory disorders were measured as risk factors in 53 of the observational studies, with the most commonly assessed outcomes including disorders of the transition period (11), and death or euthanasia (11). The most common terms used to describe nonambulatory conditions were "milk fever" (199) and "parturient paresis" (147). These terms were only further defined with explicit symptomatic criteria in 193 of the 379 studies in this review. Recumbency was the most commonly used of these criteria (144), followed by inability to rise (55). Potential gaps in the literature concerning nonambulatory dairy cattle that were identified in the present review included investigation of prognostic indicators for recovery from nonambulatory conditions that are applicable on farm, treatment alternatives to calcium administration, and guidance regarding the appropriate usage of terms meant to categorize nonambulatory dairy cattle.

Selected conditions affecting broodmares are discussed, including arterial rupture, dystocia, foal support with ex utero intrapartum treatment, uterine prolapse, postpartum colic, the metritis/sepsis/systemic inflammatory response syndrome complex, and retained fetal membranes. Postpartum colic beyond third-stage labor contractions should prompt comprehensive evaluation for direct injuries to the reproductive tract or indirect injury of the intestinal tract. Mares with perforation or rupture of the uterus are typically recognized 1 to 3 days after foaling, with depression, fever, and leukopenia; laminitis and progression to founder can be fulminant. The same concerns are relevant in mares with retention of fetal membranes.

The aim of this study was to determine if reticulorumen ph, temperature and cow activity registered before calving can serve as indicators of diseases after calving.The cows were selected according to those fitting the profile of having had two or more lactations (on average 2.9±0.13 lactations), from 60 to 0 days before and the first 30 days after calving, and being clinically healthy. The clinical examination (identification of diseases after calving) was performed from 60 days before calving to 60 days after calving. Diseases after calving were diagnosed based on clinical symptoms specific to these diseases. The pH and temperature of the contents of the cow reticulorumens and cow activity were measured using specific smaX-tec boluses manufactured for animal care.We found that the highest pH and temperature before calving can serve as biomarkers of healthy cows after calving. The lowest reticulum temperature before calving can serve as an indicator of MF after calving. A positive correlation of reticulum pH and temperature before calving can serve as biomarkers of PR. Decreasing cow activity before calving can serve as an indicator of diseases after calving. For calving prognosis, temperature of the reticulorumen can be used; it decreased 6-7 days before calving.

Due to the sudden increase of calcium demand at the onset of lactation many high yielding dairy cows experience a certain level of hypocalcaemia following parturition. The incidence of hypocalcaemia (parturient paresis) increases with age but also depends on many other factors such as the acid-base status and the availability of calcium as well as other minerals and trace elements. Hypocalcaemia can easily be treated by supplementation of calcium parenterally or orally, nonetheless, prophylaxis of the condition should be the main focus in modern dairy farming, in order to avoid its negative effects. Oral administration of calcium around parturition is the simplest way of prophylaxis, but results in a high work load and requires exact knowledge of the date of parturition. The latter also applies for the parenteral administration of vitamin D3, which should be injected 1 week before parturition. Additionally, repeated treatment with vitamin D increases the risk for calcinosis. Reducing the calcium concentration of the ration fed during the late dry period also decreases the risk for hypocalcaemia by activating the mechanisms for calcium homeostasis within the body. The induction of a mild (compensated) metabolic acidosis to increase the sensitivity of parathormone receptors and enhance intestinal calcium uptake may also be employed to prevent milk fever. For this purpose, a DCAD (dietary cation anion difference) diet is fed during the late dry period, in which the concentrations of strong cations (potassium and sodium) as well as strong anions (sulfate and chloride) are altered. This may either be achieved by reducing the potassium concentration (partial-DCAD) or by adding anionic salts (full-DCAD). This method, especially the full-DCAD variant, requires a substantial level of surveillance and monitoring. Suitable prophylactic measures for the prevention of hypocalcaemia must be chosen individually for each farm, depending on the incidence of hypocalcaemia as well as personnel and structural resources.

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) inhibits osteoclast (OC) differentiation. TRAP5b (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b) secreted by OCs reflects the numbers of mature OCs. This study assessed these OC-related markers around parturition in cows of different parities and in cows with milk fever (MF). The blood OPG and TRAP5b concentrations, as well as the ratio of OPG to TRAP5b (O/T), were measured beginning 3 weeks before (-21 d) and over a few days after calving in 49 Holstein Friesian cows at first (n = 8), second (n = 17), third (n = 12), and fourth or greater (n = 12) parities. The ratio of O/T at -21 d to O/T at calving (PreCOT) was also calculated. In the third and greater parities, seven cows developed MF (non-MF, n = 17). Regardless of the development of MF, the serum OPG started to decline in the last week of gestation only in the cows entering the second lactation, while the blood TRAP5b increased at calving in all cows. O/T decreased toward parturition only in multiparous cows. The decrease in O/T at caving was less pronounced in MF cows. PreCOT was negatively correlated with lactation number only in multiparous cows (n = 41, ρ = -0.50, P < .01). This study implied that OC differentiation toward calving was tapered in cows with advanced parities, and these indexes predict the risk of MF.

Rumination involves a complex series of muscle contractions that bring a bolus of ingesta to the mouth for further mastication before it is swallowed again. Healthy cows ruminate 8 to 9 h/d. Hypocalcemia is known to disrupt nerve and muscle function. Our hypothesis was that hypocalcemia in periparturient cows would reduce rumination activity. Twenty-six Holstein cows entering their third lactation or greater were fed a control diet [dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) = +196 mEq/kg of dry matter (DM)] or a low DCAD diet supplemented with anions (DCAD = -9 mEq/kg of DM) prepartum. Periparturient plasma Ca concentration and rumination rate were determined. Four of 12 control cows developed clinical milk fever, necessitating intravenous Ca therapy. Rumination rate decreased in all cows around the time of calving. Rumination rate on the first and second day of lactation was highly correlated with the cow's plasma Ca concentration on the first day of lactation. In one of our statistical models, a normocalcemic cow was defined as a cow whose plasma Ca concentration remained above 2.00 mM. Cows were retrospectively classified as normocalcemic, subclinically hypocalcemic, or clinically hypocalcemic (milk fever). Only 4 cows were considered normocalcemic, and all had been fed the low DCAD diet. Normocalcemic cows spent more time ruminating on the first day after calving than subclinically hypocalcemic cows or cows with milk fever. Cows with milk fever had a lower rumination rate than normocalcemic cows through d 3 of lactation. Rumination activity in cows with milk fever was almost nondetectable in the hours before and after intravenous Ca treatment for an extended period, despite the return of muscle function that allowed the cows to stand and eructate following treatment. Other statistical models using different definitions of normocalcemia gave qualitatively similar results. Diet had a great effect on plasma Ca concentration and rumination rate. Even when cows with clinical milk fever were removed from the control cow data set, cows on the low DCAD diet had significantly greater plasma Ca concentrations in the first 36 h after calving and a higher rumination rate on d 1 of lactation (248 ± 26 min) than control cows (158 ± 32 min).

This study evaluated and compared infrared thermography (IRT) and rectal temperature (RT) as screening tests to identify sick transition dairy cows. Holstein cows (n = 72; 42 primiparous) had RT and IRT temperatures taken daily from 1 to 12 days in milk (DIM). Health examinations were performed daily to diagnose retained fetal membrane, milk fever and metritis, and blood was analyzed for ß-hydroxybutyrate at 6 and 9 DIM to diagnose ketosis. Plasma concentrations of cortisol, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor α and serum amyloid A at 3, 6, 9 and 12 DIM were included as additional indicators of illness. Cows were categorized as true sick if clinically diagnosed with an illness, or if at least 2 blood parameters were above the normal range. Diagnostic test performances for RT and IRT variables were determined for each variable at a test referent value that provided the highest Youden's (J) index. The best performing screening test depended on the definition of true sickness. In general, the J index for RT was 0.15-0.17 whereas the highest J index for the IRT variables was 0.22 for the mean eye temperature and 0.19 for the mean cheek temperature. Infrared thermography was at least comparable to RT and some IRT variables performed better as a screening tests than RT. Future studies into the automation of IRT for surveillance of early postpartum diseases is warranted.

Absorption of dietary calcium from the rumen is a quantitatively important process in calcium homeostasis of ruminants. In 3 separate experiments in dairy cows, we applied a technique developed in sheep to measure the rate of strontium (Sr) absorption from the rumen as an indicator of calcium absorption capacity. Absorption from the rumen after an oral dose of SrCl2 resulted in a maximum plasma concentration of Sr after 1 h, whereas absorption from the small intestine after injection of SrCl2 into the abomasum through a cannula occurred more slowly. The second experiment demonstrated that the calcium absorption capacity index of the rumen was significantly greater in 21 lactating Friesian cows (230 ± 66, mean ± SEM) than in 6 mature, nonlactating, nonpregnant heifers (101 ± 21, mean ± SEM). In a third experiment, we compared clinically normal cows at the onset of lactation with those that developed parturient paresis. In cows that developed severe hypocalcemia, plasma concentrations of 1,25(OH)2D were significantly elevated (144 ± 60 pg/mL vs. 90 ± 54 pg/mL; means ± SEM) and their rumen calcium absorption index was significantly decreased compared with that of clinically normal cows. Evidence suggested that mobilization of calcium from bone as lactation commenced was significantly depressed in paretic cows compared with those that did not show clinical signs of hypocalcemia. Moreover, ruminal stasis suppressed the absorption of calcium from the rumen. We conclude that measurement of Sr concentration in blood plasma after an oral dose of SrCl2 into the rumen can be used as an index of rumen calcium absorption capacity under different states of calcium homeostasis.

Background: The postpartum period is an important period of excitement with the arrival of the newborn. The body then starts physiological adaptations to revert to the pregnancy states. These physiological adaptations can be associated with some cultural practices like hot abdominal compress (HAC) which may have harmful effects such as hot water burns, abdominal wrinkling and darkening. This study assessed the practice of HAC among mothers seen at the postnatal clinic of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study among 290 postpartum women recruited consecutively at the postnatal clinic in UCH between 1st December 2015 and 29th February 2016. Data collection was by pretested self-administered questionnaire and was analysed using SPSS version 22.0. p value was set at < 0.05. Results: The participants' mean age was 31.88 (SD+ 5.1 years), 97.2% of the women had ANC in formal setting and 53.8% had vaginal delivery. Of the 290 participants, 264 (91.0%) were aware of HAC and 51.7% practiced HAC. The return of uterus to normal size (34.7%) and mothers' encouragements (24.7%) were the commonest reason for practice of HAC. Mothers' and mothers-in-law' assisted with HAC in 46.2% and 36.6% of cases, respectively. More vaginally-delivered women practiced HAC (p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that practice of postpartum HAC is high and the reasons for the practice are more of tradition and cultural beliefs. There is need for more studies to better understand this culturally deep-rooted practice

The aim of this study was to estimate additive genetic and heterosis effects for milk fever (MF) in Costa Rican dairy cattle. A farm-based management information software was used to collect 223,783 parity records between years 1989 and 2016, from 64,008 cows, 2 breeds (Jersey, Holstein × Jersey crosses, and Holstein), and 134 herds. The pedigree file comprised 73,653 animals distributed across 10 generations. A total of 4,355 (1.95%) clinical cases of MF were reported within this population, affecting 3,469 (5.42%) cows. Data were analyzed using 2 animal models, both accounting for repeatability and assuming different distributions for MF event: normal (linear model) or binomial (threshold model). The models included parity as fixed effect, breed and heterosis as fixed regressions, and herd-year-season, additive genetic, and permanent environment as random effects. The models were fit using a generalized linear mixed model approach, as implemented in ASReml 4.0 software. We noted significant regression on the percentage of Holstein breed, depicting a -0.0086% [standard error (SE) = 0.0012] decrease in MF incidence for each 1-unit increase in percentage of Holstein breed. A favorable heterosis of 5.9% for MF was found, although this was not statistically significant. Heritability and repeatability were, respectively, 0.03 (SE = 0.002) and 0.05 (SE = 0.002) for the linear model, and 0.07 (SE = 0.007) and 0.07 (SE = 0.007) for the threshold model. The correlation between BLUP (all animals in pedigree) for linear and threshold models, was 0.89. The average accuracy of the estimated BLUP for all animals were 0.44 (standard deviation = 0.13) for the linear model and 0.29 (standard deviation = 0.14) for the threshold model. Heritability and repeatability for MF within this population was low, though significant.

BACKGROUND: Adjusting the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) is one of the most efficient ways to stimulate calcium homeostasis in periparturient dairy cattle. However, adjusting DCAD to the recommended negative values (-100 to -150 mEq/kg) is associated with decreased food intake and metabolic acidosis. The critical conditions of the animals at peripartum (i.e. drastic hormonal changes, decreased appetite and negative energy balance) can be detrimental to the health, productivity and welfare of the animals if combined with decreased feed intake caused by unpalatable acidogenic salts. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we analysed the ration of eight small to large dairy herds with intensive husbandry systems, including 6949 dry cows. Sodium, potassium, chlorine and sulfur concentrations in the feed were determined and DCAD was calculated. The DCAD of the ration of the farms ranged from -33.5 to +24.7 mEq/kg. Parturient paresis (PP, or milk fever) prevalence was investigated and correlated to DCAD values. RESULTS: Clinical PP occurrence in the dairies of this investigation on average declined by 87% (ranging from a 97% decline to 5% increase). This indicates that adjusting DCAD at neutral values (0 ± 30 mEq/kg range) may both lower the PP prevalence and increase ration palatability by lowering acidogenic salts in the ration. CONCLUSIONS: Further research is recommended to investigate the effects of neutral DCAD on subclinical hypocalcaemia and food intake of the cattle.

The objective of this study was to search for potential alterations in innate immunity reactants and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the blood of transition dairy cows before, during, and after clinical occurrence of milk fever (MF) and identify potential predictive biomarkers of disease. One hundred pregnant multiparous Holstein dairy cows were involved in the study starting from -8wks before the expected day of parturition until +8wks postpartum as part of a large retrospective longitudinal study. Health status, DMI, milk yield, and milk composition were monitored during the whole experimental period. Six healthy cows (CON) and 6 cows that showed clinical signs of MF were selected for blood analyses. Serum concentrations of lactate, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), ß-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), haptoglobin (Hp), and serum amyloid A (SAA) were determined. Results indicated that concentrations of serum lactate, IL-6, TNF, SAA, and Hp were greater in cows with MF than those in the CON group at different time points. Moreover, serum lactate, TNF, SAA, and Hp were greater in cows with MF starting at -8 and -4wks prior to parturition. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares - discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) showed separated clusters between MF and CON cows at -8, -4, and disease diagnosis weeks. Overall DMI and milk production were lower in MF-affected cows. Additionally milk fat and fat:protein ratio were greater in MF. In conclusion, cows affected by MF showed alterations in some of the innate immunity reactants and metabolites related to carbohydrate metabolism several weeks prior to appearance of clinical signs of MF. Variable importance in projection plots demonstrated that TNF and SAA in the serum were the strongest discriminators between MF cows and CON ones, which might be useful as predictive biomarkers of the disease.

The aim of this study was to determine risk factors associated with milk fever (MF) occurrence in Costa Rican grazing dairy cattle. A total of 69,870 cows from 126 dairy herds were included in the study. Data were collected in the Veterinary Automated Management and Production Control Program software by the Population Medicine Research Program of the Veterinary Medicine School, National University of Costa Rica, from 1985 to 2014. To determine the risk factors for MF, 2 logistic regression mixed models were evaluated. The first model used breed, month of calving, ecological life zone, herd nested within ecological life zone, and parity as fixed effects. The second model excluded first-lactation animals and cows without production information, had the same fixed effects of the first model, and added previous MF case, previous lactation length, previous dry period length, previous corrected 305-d milk yield, and calving interval length as fixed effects. Both models used animal and year as random effects. Of the 235,971 recorded lactations, 4,312 (1.83%) reported MF event. The significantly associated risk factors for MF occurrence, ranked by their highest odds ratio (OR), were parity (OR = 52.59), previous dry period length (OR = 4.21), ecological life zone (OR = 3.20), breed (OR = 3.04), previous corrected 305-d milk yield (OR = 2.39), previous MF case (OR = 2.35), and month of calving (OR = 1.36). The findings of this study are the first data reported using an epidemiological approach to study risk factors for MF in Costa Rican dairy cattle. Some of these results might be used to improve preventive management practices at the farms to reduce the incidence of this metabolic disease in grazing dairy herds.

Hypocalcemia around calving is considered a gateway disease that can lead to health disorders and decreased milk production. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the prevalence of clinical and subclinical hypocalcemia 0 to 48 h after calving. Blood samples were drawn from 12 animals of each dairy farm (n = 115) and analyzed for serum calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus concentration. Cows not affected clinically but with a serum calcium concentration below 2.0 mmol/L were characterized as subclinical hypocalcemic animals. Recumbent cows with a serum calcium concentration below 2.0 mmol/L were defined as cows suffering from clinical milk fever. Herds were classified into negative (0 to 2/12), borderline (3 to 5/12), and positive (≥6/12) according to the number of animals with hypocalcemia. Strategies to control hypocalcemia were documented. Prevalence of clinical milk fever was 1.4, 5.7, and 16.1% for second, third, and ≥fourth parity cows, respectively. None of the cows in first lactation were suffering from clinical milk fever. Based on the threshold of 2.0 mmol/L, 5.7, 29.0, 49.4, and 60.4% of cows in first, second, third, and ≥fourth lactation were suffering from subclinical hypocalcemia, respectively. Fourteen, 51, and 50 herds were classified as negative, borderline, and positive, respectively. A positive association was observed between serum calcium and serum phosphorus concentration. Serum calcium and magnesium concentration were negatively associated. Only 50 of 115 farms had a control strategy implemented to avoid hypocalcemia. Most common was the use of oral calcium products (40/115 herds), followed by feeding of anionic salts in the close-up diet (10/115 herds). These results indicate that the prevalence of clinical and subclinical hypocalcemia in German dairy herds was high and that an active control strategy was not implemented on all farms. The negative association between calcium and magnesium warrants further research regarding the physiological regulation of these 2 minerals around parturition.

O cruzamento com a raça Jersey vem sendo utilizado principalmente como alternativa para o aumento da concentração de sólidos do leite em rebanhos puros Holandês, sendo a capacidade de produção desses animais conhecida em diversos estudos. Entretanto, ainda existem limitadas informações sobre diversos fatores relevantes para a tomada de decisão e para o manejo de rebanhos cruzados, tais como resistência a doenças e facilidade de parto, sendo esta a motivação do presente trabalho, o qual objetivou avaliar a sanidade, a imunidade e a facilidade de parto de vacas mestiças Holandês x Jersey em relação a vacas puras Holandês. Foram analisados dados de dificuldade de parto, duração da gestação, retenção de placenta, indicadores sanguíneos para doenças metabólicas pós-parto (cetose e paresia puerperal hipocalcêmica) e de imunidade obtidos em vacas mestiças Holandês x Jersey e puras Holandês durante o período de um ano. O grupamento genético não afetou a facilidade de parto (P=0,4376), a retenção de placenta (P=0,7074) e a duração da gestação (P=0,2812). Vacas mestiças apresentaram maiores concentrações de gamaglobulinas (1,776 contra 1,456g/dL) e de proteína total (7,019 contra 6,525g/dL). Quanto à concentração de ß-hidroxibutirato (BHBA), ocorreu diferença somente no dia do parto, com valores mais altos para as vacas mestiças (0,580 contra 0,427mmol/L). Observou-se diferença entre grupamentos genéticos para concentração de cálcio iônico (P=0,082), com vacas mestiças apresentando concentração mais baixa (3,92 contra 4,3 mg/dL). Conclui-se que vacas mestiças apresentam melhor performance em indicadores de imunidade e pior nos indicadores de cetose e paresia puerperal hipocalcêmica no pós-parto em relação às puras Holandês. O cruzamento não aumenta o risco de distocia em vacas inseminadas com touros Holandês.(AU)


The crossbreed with the Jersey breed has been used mainly as an alternative to increasing the concentration of milk solids in Holstein herds, the production capacity of these animals having become the focus of several studies. However, there is still limited information on many relevant factors for decision-making and management of crossbreed herds, such as disease resistance and ease of calving, and this is the motivation for this work, which aimed to evaluate the health, immunity and calving difficulty in Holstein x Jersey crossbred cows compared to pure Holstein cows. Data from calving difficulty, retained placenta, gestation length, blood indicators for postpartum metabolic diseases (ketosis and hypocalcemic puerperal paresis) and immunity in a herd composed by crossbreeds and Holstein cows during one year was analyzed. The genetic groups did not affect ease of calving (P = 0.4376), retained placenta (P = 0.7074) and gestation length (P=0.2812). Crossbred cows had higher concentrations of gammaglobulins (1.776 versus 1.456g/dL) and total protein (7.019 versus 6.525g/dL). For the concentration of BHBA, differences occurred only at calving, with higher values for crossbred cows (0.580 versus 0.427mmol/L). Difference was observed between genetic groups for concentration of ionized calcium (P = 0.082), with crossbred cows presenting lower concentrations (3.92 versus 4.3mg/dL). In conclusion, crossbred cows have superior performance compared to Holstein cows for immunity indicators and lower for hypocalcemic puerperal paresis and ketosis indicators on the day of calving. Crossbred cows do not have an increased risk of dystocia in relation to pure Holstein cows when mated with Holstein bulls.(AU)

The transition period is often a great challenge for dairy cows and mineral imbalances are frequent. With the aim to better understand the mineral profile of F1 Holstein x Gyr dairy cows and their performances under the different conditions of summer and winter, we collected blood samples to measure calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Samplings were performed during summer and winter, on 15 and 13 pluriparous F1 Holstein x Gyr dairy cows, respectively. Blood sampling started 4 weeks prior to the expected calving date until 30 days postpartum. The mean concentrations of all three minerals had a different pattern during the transition period in each season, representing the interaction time x season. Calcium concentration was lower in winter and more animals suffered from subclinical hypocalcemia (100%) then in summer (38.46%). Magnesium concentration was also lower in winter and 46.67% of animals had hypomagnesemia, contributing for the higher hypocalcemia frequency observed in the same season. A high proportion of animals had hyperphosphatemia what can represent an environmental problem and more attention should be given to it. The high frequency of animals with subclinical hypocalcemia is alarming once that can lead to greater consequences.(AU)


O período de transição é uma fase de grandes desafios para vacas leiteiras, e desequilíbrios minerais são frequentes. O objetivo ao desenvolver este trabalho foi de entender melhor o perfil mineral de vacas leiteiras F1 Holandês x Gir e suas performances sob as diferentes condições de verão e inverno. Para isso, foram mensurados cálcio, magnésio e fósforo sanguíneo. As coletas de sangue foram realizadas durante os períodos de verão e inverno, e utilizaram-se, respectivamente, 15 e 13 vacas leiteiras pluríparas, todas F1 Holandês x Gir. As coletas de sangue começaram quatro semanas antes da data prevista do parto até 30 dias pós-parto. As concentrações médias e o padrão de variação dos três minerais foram distintos em cada estação do ano, representando a interação tempo de coleta x estação do ano. A concentração de cálcio foi menor no inverno, período em que todos os animais apresentaram hipocalcemia subclínica, enquanto no verão 38,46% apresentaram essa condição. A concentração de magnésio foi maior no verão e nenhum animal teve hipomagnesemia, enquanto no inverno 46,67% dos animais apresentaram hipomagnesemia subclínica, contribuindo para a maior frequência de hipocalcemia observada no inverno. Uma alta proporção de animais teve hiperfosfatemia, o que pode representar um problema ambiental. A alta frequência de animais com hipocalcemia subclínica é alarmante principalmente devido às consequências geradas por essa condição.(AU)

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to obtain the diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic approach among Swiss veterinary practitioners in cows with parturient hypocalcemia. All members of the Association for Ruminant Health were contacted per e-mail. The survey was completed by 108 (28%) of 393 that were contacted. According to the questionnaire responses, the typical presentation of a parturient paresis cow is a pluriparous middle-yielding dairy cow one day post-partum in sternal recumbency with normal consciousness. The diagnosis is usually based upon the medical history. Therapy of parturient paresis consists of mixed infusions (with calcium, phosphorus, magnesium or glucose) as well as oral preparations with calcium. The veterinarians estimate that 25-50% of the cows treated for parturient paresis need more than one treatment and that one case of parturient paresis costs CHF 200-300. Prophylactic treatments are usually used for cows, which have suffered from parturient paresis in the previous lactation, elder cows (≥ 3 lactations) as well as cows with a high body condition score (> 3.25). Prophylactic measures used by the veterinarians are vitamin D3 injections and oral preparations with calcium. They recommended a special diet, for example a low calcium diet ante-partum.


INTRODUCTION: Le but de la présente enquête en ligne était de relever les méthodes de diagnostic, de traitement et de prophylaxie utilisées en pratique en matière de parésie puerpérale hypocalcémique. Tous les membres de l'Association suisse pour la santé des ruminants ont été contactés par courriel. Sur les 393 questionnaires envoyés, 108 (28%) ont été remplis complètement et exploités. L'anamnèse typique est un animal pluripare avec une production de parésie puerpérale, il est mentionné des animaux pluripares avec une production laitière moyenne, incapables de se lever un jour après le vêlage et présentant un état de conscience normal. Le diagnostic est fréquemment posé sur la base de l'anamnèse. Les vaches laitières concernées sont traitées avec des perfusions mixtes (produits à base de calcium et de phosphore, parfois avec du magnésium et du glucose) et des préparations de calcium orales. Les vétérinaires estiment que 25 à 50% des vaches nécessitent plusieurs traitements et que les coûts totaux par animal de l'ordre de CHF 200 à 300. Du point de vue prophylactique, ce sont principalement les animaux ayant déjà souffert d'une parésie lors de la lactation précédente ainsi que les vaches plus âgées (3ème lactation et plus) et celles présentant un indice de condition élevé (> 3.25) qui sont traitées. Les vétérinaires utilisent pour cette prophylaxie des injections de vitamine D3 ainsi que des préparations orales de calcium et/ou conseillent aux propriétaires une alimentation pauvre en calcium ante partum.

A 3-year prospective study investigated the incidence of milk fever in Jersey and Holstein cows at a commercial dairy farm in Beatrice, Zimbabwe. The overall incidence of milk fever at the farm was 7.98%. Incidence of milk fever in Jerseys (14.78%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in Holsteins (4.82%). Incidence of milk fever in Jerseys beyond their fourth parity (24.85%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in Jerseys in their second (5.90%), third (6.49%) and fourth (8.73%) parities. Incidence of milk fever in Holsteins beyond their fourth parity (8.29%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in Holsteins in their second (1.43%), third (1.82%) and fourth (2.91%) parities. No significant difference existed in milk fever incidences between the second, third and fourth parities in either Jersey or Holstein cows. Incidence of milk fever in Jersey cows producing over 6114 litres per 305-day lactation (27.07%) was significantly higher than that in Jerseys producing less than 6114 litres of milk per 305-day lactation (p < 0.05). Incidence of milk fever in Holsteins producing more than 9149 litres per 305-day lactation (10.49%) was significantly higher than that in Holsteins producing less than 9149 litres of milk per 305-day lactation (p < 0.05). No significant difference existed between incidences of milk fever between the first, second and third quartile producers (p > 0.05) in either Jersey or Holstein cows. This study confirms that the risk of developing milk fever is higher in Jerseys and also increases with increasing parity and higher levels of milk production in both breeds, thus advocating for special considerations when dairy cows fit these criteria.
